Deep within the captivating rolling hills, dwelt a boy named Shepherd. His life was unadulterated, simple, and honest. His primary duty was to tend to his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind through the lone tree on the peak were his only companions. Day after day, watching over his charges imbued in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. In one such instance from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous scheme.
Tales of wild beasts preying on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One morning he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but found here no beast.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This game continued for a couple of more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is hard to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
